About
The planet down below is still decaying, lost to the corruption that started to eat away at its core over two centuries ago. A great and terrifying evil that slowly crept over the land, lurking in the darkness and out of the sight of man until it was far too late to stop it from happening. Some say the countless wars and destruction of the planet is what called it forth, waking some deep darkness within the earth and giving it the power to thrive. Others believe it was called forth with purpose by some disenchanted group of individuals who just wanted to see the world end and got far more than they bargained for. Other theories also have been put forth, but those are the reigning two.No matter the reason, the fact remains that the "Decay" started, corrupting all that it touched. First plant life started to wither and wilt, the animals went mad as if there were sweeping waves of rabies on the rise, soon it started to affect humans as well, seeping into their minds and bodies and twisting and contorting them beyond recognition. What started out as small isolated events eventually turned to mass events in densely populated zones. Something had to be done, and the greatest minds in the world tried to put their heads together to do just that. When attempts to fight back the Decay showed fruitless they switched to protecting areas from it. For a time the newly created force fields and other methods of defense seemed to work, but the Decay proved itself clever and found ways through even the highest of security in time. Thus the Sky Cities project began. Many locations were lost in the years it took to get the first Sky City up and running, so many souls lost to the terrifying afflictions brought on by the Decay. The population of the planet dwindled to a mere fraction of what it once was before that remaining portion were able to find themselves safe high up in the clouds above it all. This is where humanity would continue to live going into the future, leaving the planet to die and crumble far below them.Over the past decades more sky clusters and cities were created, spread out across the atmosphere of the planet much like floating continents, all with their own social and economic states and cultural differences as time went on. Technology is advancing rapidly, especially in the fields of robotics and cybernetics. One thing that is common across all that live in the current generation, even the eldest, is the fact none know what living on the planet below was like. None saw the Decay firsthand to truly know how terrifying it was. Lack of first hand experience breeds curiosity and expeditions started being sent out to the planet to survey what the situation was there. Most never return, even non-organic life forms such as robots typically were destroyed by...something. The very rare few that managed to make it back never did so whole, mentally or physically. How the future of Caelum Novus will proceed is still up to be seen. Will it continue to be the Utopia it purports itself to be, or will something destroy the supposed peace and cause it all to come crashing down. Only time and the strength of will to survive by those who live among the clouds will tell.
Races
Long ago, the only humanoid species on the planet was that of Humans themselves. This would eventually change as the Decay started to creep into the world. There were many early cases of humans being distorted and changed by the effects of the affliction, their very DNA being permanently altered and essentially creating new races entirely. This time was called the Twisting. Those changed during it were not lost completely to the Decay, and after much initial research were able to live relatively normal lives going forward, breeding more of their kind into the world. Now, decades later there are many 'Twistlings' often outnumbering the 'pure' humans in any given sky cluster, some completely controlled by one type or another. On top of this there has been quite a rise of sentient AI, typically in the form of robots.Follow the links below for more information.
Classification: Twistling
Classification: Mechanical
The "Pure"
Race Classification:
---
Human
Race Subtype:
---
Pureblooded Human
Lifespan:
---
60-100+ years depending on various factors
Basic Info:
---
The rarest of all the races on Caelum Novus. Most humans over the years have adapted to the new way of life, genetically altering themselves or breeding with twistlings and diluting the blood lines. The few truly pure humans left are typically amongst only the most elite and rich of the populace, the ones that can afford to keep themselves safe and healthy in spite of the rough times they live in. To find a pureblood out of these circumstances is highly unlikely but not completely impossible.
Physical Description:
---
As purebloods are not augmented or altered genetically in any way, shape, or form their appearances only span what a natural human of old would. They span a wide range of heights, weights, body types and appearances though again, all natural. (past the occasional dying of hair or such.) As soon as a pureblood choosed to enhance even a single part of themselves they are no longer accepted under this designation (if not completely shunned from their communities all together.)
Cultural Makeup:
---
As most purebloods are born into elite castes they tend to hold themselves above the rest. Even those rare ones that are born outside of the rich and famous still often think themselves better somehow then the rest of the races, even if in so many ways they lack compared to the rest past the purity of their blood. As they tend to span a wide array of ethnicities cultural differences occur from city to city to group to group. Those of the elite tend to be known for their lavish parties and throwing around of their wealth.
Strengths:
---
Sturdy and resilient, all things considered. Often wealthy. Even those of lower castes are still seen as highly important to society for their blood, which is in constant demand by many orginizations. The wealthy tend to be able to make up for some of the weaknesses listed below in techn and weaponry that others may not be able to afford.
Weaknesses:
---
Considering they live in a world where there are people of many other races with far stronger abilities and strengths then they, they're considerably weaker on a 'combative' standpoint. It'd be hard for any pureblood to go head to head with even a regular grade twistling or mechnical being, or even just an enhanced human. Far shorter lifespan then many of the other races due to their refusal to use enhancements to prolong it.
Racial Abilities:
---
None. (unless you count wealth in the case of the rich)
The Enhanced
Race Classification:
---
Human
Race Subtype:
---
Enhanced Human
Lifespan:
---
60-100+, depending on parts that are enhanced and upkeep
Basic Info:
---
Enhanced humans are humans that have gone some sort of enhancement whether genetically or mechanically (or both!) but are still for the most part human. Usually in the case of replacement of lost limbs, small alterations to genetics to either prolong one's lifespan, save them from a critical illness, or to give them some sort of added strength/skill/etc of some sort. Things such as small additional parts (working animal ears/tails, wings that are just for show, etc) also count in this category (though sometimes they can be mistaken for low grade twistlings at that point), but anything bigger then that or where the person is more enhancement then they are human will start to push them into the territory of being a cyborg instead.
Physical Description:
---
For the most part Enhanced humans look exactly the same as pureblooded humans on a general level. It just depends on what is enhanced what differences they may have. Some may not look different at all while others will have obvious differences but all in all still for the most part resemble humans at a quick glance over.
Cultural Makeup:
---
Enhanced Humans span pretty much the entirety of society's ranks from the very poor (who likely are struggling to pay for their enhancements) to the very rich (who are very possibly shunned now for being enhanced if they were originally of the pureblood caste) so their cultural makeup is just as wide and varied. They have no partiuclar special holidays or customs special to just them, past anything ethnic or religion related.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
---
Enhanced huamns strengths and weaknesses are pretty much the same as pureblooded humans, but vary depending on what their actual enhancements are. Typically they live longer then purebloods though depending on what's enhanced and how well they maintain it, and the fact they're likely more willing to get additional enhancements to prolong their life compared to a pureblood.
Racial Abilities:
---
None, as anything they may have gained from enhancements are not natural to their race.
The Cyborg
Race Classification:
---
Human
Race Subtype:
---
Cybernetic Human
Lifespan:
---
100+ depending on what all is non-organic and how well maintained
Basic Info:
---
Cyborgs are humans that have for the most part enhanced enough of their body (either genetically or mechanically, though typically more the later) to the point where they are more enhancement then they are organic human. There are many reasons one may go this route with their body, including needing extensive upgrades to save one's life, wanting to be a better combatant or physically skilled for a profession, or just a general addiction to being enhanced.
Physical Description:
---
Typically cyborgs still for the most part look like humans from a very loose perspective, specially depending on what all has been replaced. That said, there is usually enough change about them to make it obvious they are no longer more human than not no matter how hard they may try and hide it for whatever reason. Unless their enhancements include changing this fact, they span the same general skin tones and appearances as normal humans, though.
Cultural Makeup:
---
As with enhanced huamns they tend to span a large array of society, though usually are more often in higher castes in society where they have the funds needed for the extensive upkeep that is involved in keeping their non-organic systems running smoothly. There are also many companies as well as military units that will take on these costs for an individaul in exchange for their services, though that often comes with it's own risks so tread carefully. If a deal seems too good to be true, often times, it is.
Strengths:
---
Depends on what is enhanced, though typically they have greatly increased lifespans and much more strength and speed then a normal human.
Weaknesses:
---
The cost of upkeep on so many enhancements, specially if they are mechnical in nature, is fairly hefty and could easily bankrupt someone not careful enough and if not taken care of properly can lead to complete break down if not death. Also depends on how good their enhancements were implemented and how many corners were cut. Did they get good weather proofing on those mechanical parts? Was that actually the right genetic serum being injected? Problems aplenty if one is not careful.
Racial Abilities:
---
Technically none, as all abilities gained from enhancements are not natural.
The Fae Folk
Race Classification:
---
Twistling
Lifespan:
---
100-150+ based on various factors
Basic Info:
---
Over the years Faekind Twistling have developed a natural ability to use magic of various sorts, it started out by using catalysts with stored energy in the earlier years of their genetic advancements but over time was drawn into their very DNA and now it's uncommon to find one that doesn't have at least some magical ability even if they choose to not use it.
Physical Description:
---
This subtype of twistling developed features which typically involve being tall and enchanting creatures with long tapered ears and very brightly colored eyes (that often have a faint glow), very pale hair colors, and finessed tapered features. Their skin tones span a broad range of both natural and not so natural colorations. Some have additionally developed translucent bug-like wings, though they don't seem to be very practical or able to do much past hover with them unless heavily enhanced.
Cultural Makeup:
---
The faekind are generally known to be quite vain, knowing that their genetic differences make them very appealing to most who view them and tend to use that to their advantage. They're definitely the race you're most often to see up on the floating holoboards, on stages in fashion shows, as musicians and actors/acctresses. Faekind are big into celebrations and have multiple one's of their own design across the year, typically during changes of (artificial) seasons.
Strengths:
---
Their speical talent with magic is typically viewed as their strength alongside their beauty. While a lot of the magic they can use is mostly just glorified light shows and fancy tricks, there are the rare ones that hone it into actual destructive force for whatever reasons they may have, making them quite a danger to reckon with. Their magical affinity tends to give them longer life spans as well, making them usually the most long lived of the races even without any enhancements.
Weaknesses:
---
While their magical prowess is without rival, they do however suffer a good deal of physicla strength. Whihle some may train their bodies extensively or use enhancements to make up for this weakness, the fact remains they tend to be far weaker on a physical standpoint then other races.
Racial Abilities:
---
Magical prowess and ethereal beauty
The Wild Things
Race Classification:
---
Twistling
Lifespan:
---
30-70+ depending on various factors
Basic Info:
---
A fairly broad subtype of twistling that encompasses any that have grown to develop animal like features in any sort of amount. Sometimes enhanced humans get lumped into this classification though it's usually easy enough to rule them out once it's found they don't have the other natural traits that animalkin have past just the aniaml like features. They also make up a very large majority of the population, only beat out by Betweeners.
Physical Description:
---
Animalkin come in all types from those that look mostly human but just have animal like features such as ears, tails, maybe some patches of scale or fur to those who are full on anthromorphic. The one's with mostly human features tend to keep to the same appearances that huamns have past their animal features and those that are more animal like are typically based off real animals. There are a very rare subdivision that seem to have developed based on more mythical creatures such as unicorns, but those are usually the result of lots of specific breeding between animalkin and faekind twistlings
Cultural Makeup:
---
Of all the twistlings, animalkin are the most likely to keep within their kind, typically viewing their bloodlines as much stronger for it as the more they breed amongst each other the more their animal features will be heightened (those that are almost all animal are usually the result of this compared to those who are more humanlike). There is defintiely a pack like mentality to a lot of them and unforutnately a lot of prejudice against them from society in general, specially to certain types (those based off 'vermin' creatures such as rats, snakes, the like tend to get it the worst, as unfair as that may be). That said, they are often highly sought after by military units and as test subjects for a wide variety of things. As many animals from the old world are now extinct a lot of animalkin do tend to be very intersting to scientist to study, specially the ones most animal like. It's rare for them to choose to do any sort of enhancements, if anything any surgeries done is to remove features, not add them.
Strengths:
---
In general they are stronger and faster then most other races and fairly sturdy with additional strengths dependign on type of animal
Weaknesses:
---
Often times they have some of the shortest lifespans, specially the ones that are more animal like. Various individual weaknesses depending on type of animal. They are also the breed most easily afflicted by mental afflictions
Racial Abilities:
---
Dependant on type of animal, but usually claws/talons, ability to fly for winged ones, sharp fings, better hearing or sight, etc.
The "Demons"
Race Classification:
---
Twistling
Lifespan:
---
40-70+ depending on various factors
Basic Info:
---
A subtype of twistlings that developed traditionally 'demonic' traits and are commonly known to have surprisingly high levels of charisma, are incredibly clever and quick witted, and adept at most forms of combat. They're typically the most visually distinct from humans (bar the more fully animallike animalkin) and tend to be the one least likely to enhance themselves due to how much their genetic makeup is already altered. They are the closest of the twistlings to being too currupted by the decay to be allowed to live amongst humanity.
Physical Description:
---
As their subtype name suggests, the demonoid twistlings take on appearances of a more 'demonic' persusation. Horns of all shapes and sizes, barbed tails, darkened/colored scelera, slitted pupiles, and/or patches of scale/bone/spikes on their skin are all very common things of note. Their skin tones range pretty much the full spectrum of more natural tones and less natural and hair/eye colors are just as diverse as are the wide range of heights and body types they tend to come in.
Cultural Makeup:
---
Of all the twistlings demonoids tends to be the most solitary as far as keeping within their own race goes. They're often times the one's most likely to breed with humans/other types of twistlings so as to help dilute their demonic traits to be less intimidating in their offspring. They have no partiuclar holidays and in general aren't much for big celebrations.
Strengths:
---
They are typically very quick, strong, smart witted, and incredibly sturdy creatures that can have a wide variety of other strengths depending on what their exact traits are.
Weaknesses:
---
They tend to be very sensitive to bright lights and are the most likely to have organs fail at younger ages due to just how deteriorated their dna can be (specially their eyes), and in general are the most likely to have 'decay outbreaks' where they go out of control and have to be put down before they infect others
Racial Abilities:
---
It depends on what exact traits they have, though they naturally are stronger and faster then most and have some degree of low light or full night vision
The Short Ones
Race Classification:
---
Twistling
Lifespan:
---
60-125+ depending on various factors
Basic Info:
---
This subtype of twistlings consist of incredibly short but very technically skilled and intelligent individuals that span a very wide range of expertises. They are proficient at learning just about anything with ease and generally are seen as the 'brains' of society. Past humans they are typically the race most likely to enhance themselves, usually in ways that will help them excell even further at wahtever professions they are involved in.
Physical Description:
---
Stoutlins are typically very short, ranging between 2 feet to 4 at their tallest. Their facial expressions are often quite exaggerated, especially their eyes and ears. The hair on their bodies tend to grow fast and thick and it's not uncommon to see stoutlins of any gender sporting elaborately beautiful hair and beard styles. They come in pretty much all skin tones as normal humans, but their eyes and hair run a very colorful and broad spectrum.
Cultural Makeup:
---
It's common to find Stoutlins in the various tech and bio labs across the clusters, and in general in position of importance in any intellectual field. While they have no specific holidays based to them they do love a good celebration, specially if good food and drink is involved, and are known to throw incredibly big parties for all the major holidays
Strengths:
---
Incredibly intelligent and able to pick up new skills easily, typically very agile and quick on their feet
Weaknesses:
---
Due to their small stature they tend to be a bit more on the fragile size without any sort of enhancements and they are often the most easily afflicted by physical ailments.
Racial Abilities:
---
Their ability to pick up just about any skill or learn any knowledge without much difficulty
Robots
Race Classification:
---
Mechanical
Lifespan:
---
Technically none as long as parts are routinely maintained (parts themselves can wear down between 3-10 years depending on conditions and other factors)
Basic Info:
---
Robots are mechanical lifeforms that serve a large variety of functions in society. They sometimes have some form of actual sentience, typically pre-programmed or adapative, but typically are very simple in nature and built for a certain task that they keep to. Typically used in all parts of life from construction and factory work to scientific research, to just every day life things. There are some that are built for actual social purposes or combative ones, and they are given the best in sentience tech so as to better communicate with any organic lifeforms they may be working with.
Physical Description:
---
Robots can sometimes resemble humans but more often then not they look like other creatures or things all together, it just depends on what their main purpose is, really. They can be as small as a household appliance (that's right your teapot is a robot!) They come in all manner of makes and models, some with more exposed inner workings while others are fully coated with cases ranging from cheaper materials to the most state of the art nanotech. It all depends on how much money one wants to put into them and their routine maitenance, really.
Cultural Makeup:
---
There is no real specific cultural things of note. They are usually made to serve a certain purpose and don't veer too much outside of that, as such they can be found amongst literally any group or culture in the world and serve a multitude of purposes with them.
Strengths:
---
Sturdy, able to complete a very large array of tasks depending on their programming
Weaknesses:
---
Require regular maitenance to keep running smoothly specially depending on what types of tasks they regularly perform, even a couple parts malfunctioning can cause them to completely go unresponsive
Racial Abilities:
---
It depends on what they were programmed, designed, and created to do, really
The Artificial
Race Classification:
---
Mechanical
Race Subtype:
---
Android (AI and Human-Core)
Lifespan:
---
technically none as long as their parts are regularly maintained, parts tend to be fairly high grade in the case of most Androids and thus can last upwards to 10+ years with basic mainteance before any serious repairs or replacements may be needed (depending on how physically active the android is, specialy combatively)
Basic Info:
---
Androids are humanoid robots that have full sentience. There are two differnet distinctions of android, which are AI Androids and Human-Core Androids. AI Androids are robotic shells that are controlled by extremely complex AI programs that can sometimes also integrate itself in and out of the net, though in this case the AI actually has a 'main' host that is always connected to the holoNet and is the real 'person' in the machine, while the version of itself that's in the robotic body is simply a clone that relays data to the host but cannot control the digital realm in any way itself (this is the result of past incidents causing a need for much stricter security on allowing access to foreign elements entering and leaving the holoNet.) AI Androids tend to be more like robots then humans as far as emotions and morals go, unless they are otherwise programmed differently or have adaptive programming that eventually 'learns' these things.
Human-Core Androids are robotic shells that have had organic beings memory/mind transferred into their cores. There are a variety of reasons why one may do this ranging from just genuinely wanting to be an android, to saving one's self from terminal illness that is incurable by any other means. It's also fairly common for large organizations or military to pay for individuals to undertake this process as their new mechanical body would be much more useful to said group then their organic one. These types of androids are unable to go in and out of the holoNet like AI types are, though they can still access it just like any normal person can. Human-Core androids tend to have all the same range of emotions and morals and thoughts as their original organic selves, past any bad programming, damage to their mental core, or by choice.
Physical Description:
---
Androids are always humanoid looking, compared to robots that can look like just about any creature. They come in all shapes and sizes as far as humanoid creatures go and can either look more robotic with clear mechanical parts or look completely identical to humans complete with fake skin and hair and all the other trappings. In the case of the very human looking ones the main feature that will help differentiate them from actual organic creatures is a thin scanbar that can be found on the back of their neck and a registration code on the sole of their left foot.
Cultural Makeup:
---
Androids integrate themselves into just about every walk of life, serving a wide array of purposes from being caretakers to combative types and everything in between and beyond. They have one day every year in celebration of AI being accepted as an official classification of sentience in society, after a long few decades or so of fighting for their independence. Up to that point they were treated pretty much at the same level as the most simple minded robots. To this day they are still seen as lesser beings by certain types of groups in society.
Strengths:
---
Strong, quick, intelligent (specially in the case of AI Androids), and capable of a large array of tasks depending on what all exactly they were built for
Weaknesses:
---
Just like their robot brethren, they are subject to the needed maitenance of their parts. Typically they are made of much sturdier and higher grade cybernetics and nanotech then a robot and as such it lasts longer, but it does ultimately wear down (specially in the case of more active and/or combative types)
Racial Abilities:
---
It depends on what they were primarily built for
Those in Between
Race Classification:
---
Human/Twistling
Lifespan:
---
40-70+ depending on various factors
Basic Info:
---
Betweener humans and twistlings are for the most part the most common type of human or twistling you will see. They are the result of many generations of purebloods and twistlings procreating. What classifies them as more one or the other depends on the result of various tests as well as their overall appearance.
Physical Description:
---
Betweener Humans tend to look for the most part like pureblooded humans, but retain at least one main feature from their Twistling genetics (if they are the result of many generation of different mixtures it tends to be whatever was the most recent in their genetic line).
On the other hand, Betweener Twistlings also tend to look more human then a normal twistling, but have retained a few more physical twistling traits and usually have kept most of the twistlings strengths and abilities, unlike a Betweener Human which typically retains none of the later.
Cultural Makeup:
---
This really depends on what type of family the Betweener hails from. Outside of purebloods which tend to show great disdain for them they are treated fairly neutrally in society and fit into just about any area of it. Past that their as culturally diverse as any person. One special thing Betweeners get is their own special day once a year to celebrate the cause of keeping the population alive called Meeting Middle Day. There's a lot of fanfare and a parade and everything. Don't forget your government sanctioned spectro visors so you can see the fake fireworks in the sky!
Strengths:
---
Betweener Twistlings tend to retain the abilities and strength of their twistling genetics, though at a reduced capacity comparatively. Betweener humans for the most part are just about the same as a pureblood human as far as strength goes as any physical traits they have from their twistling genetics is only skin deep.
Weaknesses:
---
Both types of Betweeners tend to have greatly reduced life spans compared to their host parents, though it's particularly so in the twistling variant. The continued mixing of genetics has degraded their DNA past any easy repair and without serious genetical ehancements to try and remedy that they rarely see more then three quarters their parents lifespan, which tend to be extremely expensive procedures that most can't easily afford.
Racial Abilities:
---
Betweener humans have none, Betweener twistlings it depends on what type of twistling they are primarily a mix of.
The Experiments
Race Classification:
---
Unclassified
Lifespan:
---
none, technically they do not age and they are capable of regeneration
Basic Info:
---
A relatively new 'race' to Caelum Novus, if even they can fully be called a race. The end result of one too many failed experiments across the genetics and cybertech labs (or perhaps not so failed depending on who you are and how you look at it.) Ignored and often thrown out as failed material from other experiments, over time they started to develop a sentience if their own. They proved able to learn rapidly and remember the appearance and make of literally anything they touch, humanoid or otherwise. This developed into an ability to mimic these things they've 'recalled', able to take on a the form of whatever or whomever they've studied, though depending on how much access they had to the source material their level of perfect mimicry varies.
Physical Description:
---
Nanegellum are creatures that are an amalgam of nanomachines and indiscernible genetic material that in their 'natural' state pretty much just resemble a gelatinous blob of varying sizes, shapes, and colors. In their mimicry form they look like whatever they are trying to mimic, to varying degrees of success. Even the most developed nangellum's mimicry will not be 100% perfect, there will always be something just a little off about the person they mimic, speically to someone close to them. Also, their mimicry is only skin deep, they may look like whatever they are copying, but they do not have any of the original sources abilities, strengths, or otherwise. However, in mimic form the condensing of their genetic makeup will make them fairly sturdy and solid, though there may just be the slightest bit of give to their skin that may normally not be there for that person. If they have learned the appearance of more then one person they can technically mix and match mimic features, creating completely new looks.
Cultural Makeup:
---
Nangellum are - I N C R E D I B L Y - rare in Caelum Novus. Only a few of them really exist at any given time as there's a whole big mix of factors involved in them coming into existence. Scientists haven't yet been able to replicate it naturally. Also, since they are fairly new society still hasn't quite figured out what to do with them. So far they haven't really done much more then cause a little mischief and confusion and as such aren't seen as a high level threat, just an odd curiousity. Time will tell how this may change.
Strengths:
---
Ability to mimic things they have touched/studied, incredibly hard to kill (they can regenerate so unless you destroy most of their mass they will just grow back), incredibly quick learners and can master any language and/or learn any knowledge if given some time and access to materials to learn it from
Weaknesses:
---
Mimicry is not perfect something will always be off and they do not gain any of the sources abilities, they are incredibly easy to trap if caught in their non-mimic form, are incredibly sensitive to high temperatures (both cold and hot)
Racial Abilities:
---
Mimicry, fast learning, and rapid regeneration
Societal Roles
The following are the types of people who make up the societal structure of Caelum Novus. From the big to the small all types are needed to keep the city running (or in some cases are here to try and burn it all down). This is far from an exhaustive list and I will add to it as needed. This section is still very much a work in progress, come back later for more detailed information.
High Rollers:
---
The rich and the famous, those who rule from the upper class. They go through life throwing money at whatever they want. Probably not all that good in a fight, but they sure know how to hire people to do it for them!
Machine Techs:
---
These are the people who are good with machines. Making them, fixing them, working them. They tend to have different specializations of what types of machinery they work best with. Some specialties include vehicles, weaponry, and general computer tech.
